Birding Northern Peru 2026

NORTHERN PERU TOURS

Peru is a country with a lot of diversity of many species of birds and various species of butterfly renas plants.

This country is very attractive for birdwatchers.

As well as endemic and migratory austral and resident.

Day 1-   Tarapoto -Bellavista- Plataforma (Flor de Café)

Arrive to Tarapoto before lunch, drive straight from Tarapoto to Flor de Café (Plataforma). First chance to see the major targets.

Targets Birds:

  • SCARLET-BANDED BARBET
  • CORDILLERA AZUL ANTBIRD
  • Undescribed Woodcreeper or Plataforma Woodcreeper
  • Blackish Pewee

Other target species: Roraiman Flycatcher, Foothill Antwren, Lined Antshrike, Napo Sabrewing, Rose-fronted Parakeet, Western Striolated-Puffbird, White-bellied Pygmy-Tyrant

Also possible (lower priority): Ash-browed Spinetail, Cerulean Warbler, Long-tailed Potoo, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager.

Overnight at Capito Lodge-Plataforma.

Day 2-3 Plataforma Birding around

Two full days at the site to maximize our chances for the main targets, and also many other good species possible.

  • Foothill Schiffornis
  • Jet Manakin
  • Subtropical Pygmy-Owl

Other target species: Napo Screech Owl, Blue-rumped Manakin, Straw-backed Tanager, Yellow-throated Spadebill, Red-billed Tyrannulet, Buff-throated Tody-Tyrant, Ocellated Woodcreeper, Grey-tailed Piha, Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater, Blue-browed Tanager

Also possible (lower priority): Blue-rumped Manakin, Yellow-billed Nunbird, Olive-chested Flycatcher, Blue-browed Tanager, Wire-crested Thorntail, Black-and-white Becard, Chestnut-tipped Toucanet, Epaulet Oriole Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Golden-eared Tanager, Golden-naped Tanager, Yellow-breasted Antwren.

Overnight at Plataforma.

Day 4  Plataforma – Tarapoto- Moyobamba

In the middle of the morning we will leave for   Bellavsta, we will make some stops in the Huallaga dry forest valley to look for some specialties of this ecosystem. In the afternoon, we will continue to Tarapoto city

Day 5. Tarapoto-Cordillera Esacelra-Moyobamba

Dotted Tanager, Plumbeous Euphonia, Koepcke’s Hermit, Balck  Antbird, White-eyed Pygmy-Tyrant, Maroon-tailed Parakeet, Rose-fronted Parakeet(Garleps), Oilbird

Overnight Moyobamba

Day 5-6. Moyobamba-Morro de Calzada

Very early will leave to the path of the Misquiyaquillo stream to see some specialities. We will walk 2 km aproximatly, afterwards will have a lunch in the lodge and the afternoon will go to around to Moyobamba city to search another specialities of sabanas.

Black-bellied Tanager(Huallaga Tanager), Varzea Thrush, Painted Manakin, Chestnut-throated Spinetail, Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, Fiery-throated Fruiteater, White-plumed Antbird, Pale-eyed Blackbird, Possible, Point-tailed Palmcreeper,  Black-billed Seed Finch, Great-billed Hermit, Lafresnaye’s Piculet, Pale-eyed Thrush, Striped Owl, Stygian Owl, Rufous-crested Coquette, White-chinned Sapphire, The endemic Painted Manakin

Night at Moyobamba

Day 7- Moyobamba – Aguas Verdes (Arena Blanca Reserve)-Owlet Lodge

Starting early-morning from Moyobamba to Aguas Verdes to visit the Arena Blanca Reserve. This place has tinamous and quails’ feeders, here we will see more tan 14 species of hummingbirds. Afterwards will go to Llantería to watch the Ecuadorian Piedtail and continuing the route will visit Alto Nieva to search some hummingbirds and the end of the day will arrive to Owlet Lodge. In this site will search to Long-whiskered Owlet.

Night to Owlet Lodge.

Day 8- Longwhiskered Owlet, places-Owlet Lodge

Here, we will watch birds in the diferent paths that has the Owlet Lodge in Abra Patricia, after will visit to Antpittas’ feeder that has the reserve. Later we will go to Fundo Alto Nieva to watch the Ochre-fronted Antpitta’s feeder. The finally will return to Owlet Lodge to looking for another species of owls. Dinner.

Day 9- Longwhiskered Owlet, places

Early-morning we will leave to Sunagel path to search some species of restricted range. This site is 15 minutes from Owlet Lodge and after we will go to Venceremos. This place has interesting mixed flockes. During a trip of 50 minutes will arrive to the Brisa Hostel in Pomacochas.
